Christmas light installation cost on the Central Coast comes down to your house, not a flat rate. How much roofline you want lit, how tall and steep the roof is, extras like trees or walkways, and whether removal is included all change the price. Clear Wave Windows gives free quotes across San Luis Obispo County.
Most holiday lighting gets priced after someone looks at the house. Two homes on the same street in Atascadero can come out very differently: one has a single straight roofline, the other has three gables, a second story and a row of trees out front.
What goes into the cost of Christmas light installation?
The price covers labor, the lights and hardware, and ladder time at both ends of the season. Some parts of a house move it a lot more than others.
| Factor | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Length of roofline and trim | More linear footage means more lights, more clips and more time on the roof. |
| Roof height and pitch | Second-story eaves and steep roofs take more setup and slower, more careful ladder work. |
| Corners, gables and dormers | Every peak and turn is extra measuring and securing. |
| Extras beyond the roof | Trees, shrubs, porch columns, railings and walkways are each a separate piece of work. |
| Lights and hardware | Whether the quote includes new lights or works around ones you already own. |
| Removal and storage | Taking everything down after the holidays is a second visit. |
| Power | Where the outdoor outlets are and how far each run has to reach. |
How does the size and shape of your roofline affect the price?
Roofline is usually the biggest single factor. A single-story house in Los Osos with one long eave is simple: one run, few corners. A two-story home in San Luis Obispo with dormers, a porch and a detached garage needs more measuring, and more separate runs that all have to get back to an outlet.
Before you ask for a quote, decide which parts matter to you. Plenty of people light only the rooflines that face the street, since that's what neighbors and visitors see. It gets most of the look without paying to light the back of the house.
Does a two-story home cost more to light?
Usually, yes, because height adds time. Ladders get set and moved more carefully, steep pitches slow things down, and some sections need a different approach entirely. The same length of lights takes longer to hang at 20 feet than at 10.
Height is also where doing it yourself stops being a fun weekend project. Our post on DIY vs. professional holiday lighting walks through when it makes sense to hang them yourself.
What is included in a professional installation?
With Clear Wave Windows, the service runs from the first conversation to the day the lights come down:
- A design consultation to plan a display that suits the house. Some people want a simple roofline outline; others want something bigger.
- Energy-efficient LED lights and sturdy hardware picked to hold up in Central Coast weather.
- Installation, with every strand securely attached and properly wired.
- Maintenance during the season if something stops working.
- Removal after the holidays, with the lights stored for next year.
When you compare quotes from different companies, check each of these lines. A lower number that leaves out takedown, or expects you to buy the lights, often isn't lower once you add those back in.
How do coastal weather and wind affect holiday lights on the Central Coast?
Near the water in Cambria, Cayucos and Morro Bay, salt air and wind are part of the plan. Wind is the usual reason displays come loose, so lights need to be clipped down firmly with the ends of each run secured. Salt air is also hard on exposed connections over a few weeks.
Inland, in Paso Robles, Templeton and Atascadero, wind still matters, and dust settles on the lights through the season. Neither changes the price much by itself, but both shape which materials and fastening make sense. We covered fastening in more detail in Holiday Lights & High Winds.
How can you keep the cost down?
A few choices make a real difference without leaving the house looking half done:
- Light the rooflines people see from the street and leave the back of the house dark.
- Pick one or two features to highlight, such as the roofline and the front porch, instead of every tree and shrub in the yard.
- If the windows need cleaning or the gutters need clearing before the holidays, ask about that in the same quote request so it can all be planned together.
- Keep the same layout from one year to the next. The lights are stored after removal, so repeating a design you liked is simpler than starting over.
A smaller display done neatly usually looks better from the street than a bigger one with gaps and sagging runs.
How do you get an accurate quote?
Tell us three things when you request a free quote:
- Which areas you want lit: the front rooflines, the whole roof, trees, walkways or the porch.
- Whether the home is one or two stories.
- Your town. We install across San Luis Obispo County, including Cambria, San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles.
First-time customers get $20 off. If the windows and gutters need attention, get that done before the lights go up so the display isn't sitting on a dirty house; our holiday prep checklist covers what to clean. You can see everything the service includes on our Christmas light installation page, or call (805) 203-0345.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to buy my own Christmas lights?
No. Clear Wave supplies energy-efficient LED lights and the hardware to hang them. If you already have lights you'd like to use, mention it when you ask for your quote.
Is takedown included?
Yes. After the holidays we remove the lights and decorations and store them for next year, so they're not taking up your garage.
What happens if a strand stops working in December?
Call us. In-season maintenance is part of the service, and we'll fix it so the display stays lit through the holidays.
When should I book Christmas light installation?
As soon as you know you want lights. Asking for a quote in October or early November gives you the widest choice of installation dates.
Do you install holiday lights outside Cambria?
Yes. Clear Wave Windows installs across San Luis Obispo County, including Cambria, Cayucos, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Atascadero and Paso Robles.
